人類の植民惑星が異星人ククトニアンに攻撃され、護衛の守備隊は全滅、13人の子供達が取り残されてしまう。彼らは異星人に囚われた家族や友人達を自分達の力だけで救出するために、人型兵器ラウンドバーニアンで異星人と戦いながら、地球軍の練習艦ジェイナス号で旅をする、というストーリー。ジュール・ヴェルヌの小説『二年間の休暇』（少年向けには『十五少年漂流記』）をモチーフにしている。この宇宙版『十五少年漂流記』のアイディアは、『機動戦士ガンダム』の企画時に考案されたものだったが、『ガンダム』はそれとは異なる方向へと進んだため、改めてこのモチーフを用いてアニメ化したのが本作であり、そのため「原案」として富野由悠季の名前がクレジットされている。 メカやアクションに加えて、等身大の少年少女が生活し成長する物語でもある本作品は好評を博し、本放送後にも総集編が2本（『カチュア...。The Cold War has ended, and the Russian government has decided get rid of a deadly bioweapon sample by returning it to the United States, from whom it had been stolen.
