家住岛根县安来市的饭田布美枝（松下奈绪 饰）出生在一个商人家庭，与姐妹们相比她是如此的不起眼，所以心里有着种种的执拗和自卑。在昭和35年的秋天，她通过相亲认识了名不见经传的漫画家村井茂（向井理 饰）。过惯了富裕日子的布美枝，婚后自然被村井家的赤贫所困扰。当然在各种龃龉和挫折过程中，她咬着牙坚持下来，并且鼓励好不容易找到前进方向的丈夫朝着既定的目标前进。一对平凡的夫妻，走过战后最苦难的岁月，见证着一个战败国家的顽强复兴，也迎来了他们人生的辉煌…… 本片根据漫画家水木しげる（《墓场鬼太郎》）的妻子武良布枝的自传改编。。'In Vitro' is an otherworldly rumination on memory, history, place and identity.
