北宋末年，昏庸享乐的宋徽宗赵佶在童贯、蔡京等奸臣的溜须逢迎下，驱使着王朝走向毁灭的边缘。一个不切实际的梦境，让皇帝对江南的美女念兹在兹。他假扮太监周游皇宫，无意间邂逅了美丽女子方玉儿。起初二人相谈甚欢，但玉儿在知晓皇帝的身份后反而变得冷淡，原来这一切都和童贯假借寻访美女之名屠戮碣村有关。为了查明真相，赵佶带着玉儿前往江南，谁知却遭到童贯的重重阻挠，更有与玉儿曾有婚约的方腊欲行刺杀。在这一过程中，玉儿对皇帝的心结慢慢解开， 离乱当前，或是江山或是美人是最为痛苦的选择。只是美人难再得，却又奈何……。Plebs is described as "a thoroughly modern comedy in an ancient setting."
